    It's pretty simple; it just takes a while to get the hang of it. I sharpen it with the belt sander, then with whetstones by hand, and finally with a steel.

    This only holds true when working with steel of a higher carbon content. Railroad spikes are about .05% carbon, so in this case, water is the best medium in which to quench the knives.

    you should cool the knife in oil a couple of times motor oil works good but be careful... this will help with the hardness and help keep the knife sharper longer..
