Jean Kilbourne's pioneering work helped develop and popularize the study of gender representation in advertising. Her award-winning Killing us Softly films have influenced millions of college and high school students across two generations and on an international scale. In this important new film, Kilbourne reviews if and how the image of women in advertising has changed over the last 20 years.

With wit and warmth, Kilbourne uses over 160 ads and TV commercials to critique advertising's image of women. By fostering creative and productive dialogue, she invites viewers to look at familiar images in a new way, that moves and empowers them to take action.

  • I cant say who is ...

I cant say who is to blame but one thing is certain, Idealism weather it is Scared or profane is the greatest erect Idol man has created. The suggestion of something highly superior and beautiful out side of nature itself is derange. We are taught to indoctrinate something that is so base above our Soul.

  • This video is not ...

This video is not against female beauty. It is an effort to protect it from commercial exploitation. There is NOTHING on the face of the Earth that has more power to the eye of man. To use feminine beauty to sell a bunch of garbage we don't need, robs it of it's mystery and allure!

  • The tragedy is that ...

The tragedy is that we do this for love. We have learnt that to deserve love, we must earn the right. By achievments. So we spend so much time away from our loved ones, to earn their love, that we really get separated from those we love. We get hated by our children and despised by our spouses. And in modern days, we get blaimed for not taking responsibility for home and family. Thats part of our genderrole, thats part of the price we pay, just as objectification of women has its price on women

  • Men CAN cry. We are ...

Men CAN cry. We are just not allowed to. Many men cry. But they cry alone. Because crying infront of others, specially women, is a social stigma.

A better comparison to objectified is that men should not performance-ified. Yes, as a genderrole, women are measured by their beuty. But men are measured by their success. And so we sacrifice all to much to be successful, we work too hard, to long, we dont listen when our bodies tell us to quit, we take greater risks, some win, some loose.

  • No its about saying ...

No its about saying beauty or rather a specific idea of it, is not the be all and end all. Its mostly focused on adverts who get to us and affect us without us knowing somtime.

  • there's a fine ...

there's a fine difference between wanting to feel good about oneself and wanting to fit into society's idea of how we should be.
there's nothing wrong with wearing a little bit of makeup and fixing our hair to look nice, the problem is when it becomes a vulgar exageration.

  • It doesn't help ...

It doesn't help that men often seem to hold their women to high standards of beauty. Women need to see a change in men's attitudes- that will help their own. But, I agree, women need to look at their own selves and think how much things really matter. And it's true- men face different prejudices, based off of the ideal of "masculinity." Men have difficult pressures as well. Everyone is faced with gender expectations. Men should be able to cry. Women shouldn't be objectified. etc.

  • I have discovered ...

I have discovered the most exciting, the most arduous literary form of all, the most difficult to master, the most pregnant in curious possibilities. I mean the advertisement. It is far easier to write ten passably effective Sonnets, good enough to take in the not too inquiring critic, than one effective advertisement that will take in a few thousand of the uncritical buying public.
