God I love West Virginia =] I was at my cousins house in Morgantown after the Fiesta Bowl, and we burnt 3 couches... Did you know its actually a law in Morgantown that you have to tie your couches down on game day? I think its hilarious! I can't wait until I graduate so I can go to WVU!

    LETS GO..... MOUNTAINEERS!!!!

  • well, i dont know ...

well, i dont know of anyone who has ever burned a new couch. most are old and nasty. if you figure you have a group of 100 students, at least one has a couch that they're looking to get rid of. plus you dont do it after every game, so you can save it for a special occasion.

where i live, you can drive around and find people who have left them on the side of the road for the garbage, and just throw it in the back of your truck and keep driving.

the one in this video i bought at goodwill

Interesting so do you just buy a new couch after every game or just have a supply of old burnable couches?

  • Pitt students like ...

Pitt students like to make fun of WVU for this interesting little tradition, however ironically enough, many couches when up in flames in the streets of Oakland mere moments after Pitt beat WVU in this year's Backyard Brawl.

    Hypocrites. *shakes head*

I hope this helped clear it up for you a little...thanks for your support. It truly is a great team, and a great state!!

  • We burn win or lose ...

We burn win or lose, preferably win. It has, however, become a felony to burn a couch in Morgantown. I was aware that there was a $10,000 fine and possible expulsion for any student caught doing it, but when i was in Mo-Town this past weekend, my cousin informed me it is a felon.

Thankfully, this law has not extended to Pennsylvania, and i can burn away in my back yard (except my crazy cat lady neighbor likes to complain)

  • i would love to ...

i would love to explain it to you, sorry it took me so long.

WVU started burning couched after the Pitt vs WVU game in 1975. It was a monumental game, which sent WVU to the peach bowl, Bobby Bowden to FSU, and Pitt back to Pittsburgh with their sad little tails tucked between their legs. The game was won on a last second field goal scored by WVU's Bill McKenzie. The first couch burning occurred in none other than the street of Sunnyside. And so it began.
