It may be hard to imagine but did you know that something useful could actually be derived from human waste? As stinky as it is, human waste is a viable energy option whose surface Kenyans have barely scratched. Like cow dung, it readily forms Biogas, a renewable source of energy which can solve your energy problems. And as our senior reporter Slvia Chebet reports, this untapped potential could save you the trouble caused by the current energy crisis in the country.
The government should not only give the slum dwellers proper sanitation and energy, but also work to eliminate shanties by setting a target for housing every year, but also extend and subsidise the hardware for biogas production to the rural areas where they keep cattle to save on trees. We need education, thinking and investments. Simple things that can change our country. Kudos Prof. Kahangi, you gave us tissue culture bananas, now champion biogas. I am proud of you and of JKUAT!!!!!
