  • I think I will ...

I think I will venture out and share my opinion (the only legitimate one), that Coltrane and Getz were the greatest of all time, radically different but equally great(est). Parker was a F**king punk.

  • I think we all can ...

I think we all can agree here that Stan Getz sounds like sex. Slow, steamy, hot romantic sex. And Coltrane sounds like a very fast and beautiful car. Say, a Ferrari. You don't need to go that fast, but who cares? You can, and you do, because its awesome. Love them both.

  • Wow, what an all ...

Wow, what an all star line up! How many times do you get to hear Trane and Getz side by side? For two players of such different style, they really tune into one another.

  • Check out some ...

Check out some transcriptions of Getz (or do your own), and you can see the guy really "felt" the harmony even on complex chords, for example he will make a big leap and hit an altered note (say b5) on the next measure. And we're not talking contrived II-V licks or something, but by melodic invention. Good examples from the bossa nova recordings. Anyway this is metalanguage...the music speaks for itself.

By countermelody I mean implying there is one by playing it after or during the principal one. But not at the same time obviously! He's not Roland Kirk!

  • I take back what I ...

I take back what I said about Getz, even though it was a just asserting preference. Mood often influences which you feel like listening to. They were both great. Today I'm in a Getz mood. He may not have strayed as far as Trane from the underlying harmony (tho he did go out there), but he has melodic depth, perfect note choice, subtleties like subtones, alt fingerings, even playing his own countermelodies. He created intricate stories on ballades. A master.

  • I like Getz but ...

I like Getz but find him samey. He swings but it gets monotonous cos there's no contrast. Getz has the Lester thing but without the assymetry, surprises and interesting dissonances in Prez's early stuff. What he does have is that tone, put to good use in ballads - he has some stonking beautiful ideas on slow tunes.
Coltrane is often not so pretty but has more dimensions to him, which makes me come back to him again and again. This is probably because the guy kept on searching for new things
