Ok, to clarify both the Events of Halo Wars and Halo in general.
Originally there were hundreds of SPARTAN-2's however most were killed in battle or "washed-out" during training. Shortly after the events of Halo Wars Dr. Catherine Halsey (Creator of the SPARTAN-2 Project) took several Spartans and went to investigate the World Onyx. Later they were trapped there.
