Steam makes low demands on technology. The Romans could have developed steam power. They had every element of it - plumbing, hot water, metalwork, piping, engineering. But they also had something else in abundance that made steam power unnecessary: slaves. I can't help wondering how things would have worked out if some Roman engineer had got off his duff, and prototyped a steam chariot. It's a source of considerable frustration to me. The industrial revolution would have happened 2000 years earlier, and in Rome instead of Manchester. If the Romans had developed steam, today we'd all be travelling in flying cars, instructing our robot maids by video phone. In Latin.

got it from the cessna website and the pilot and I agree that that was an extremely conservative estimate. The Citation X actually burns alot more than that, but I was lazy and didn't want to get too involved in a calculation whose purpose was purely to make a point, but if you'd like, I could go back and get all the numbers, or I could call the pilot, and tell you precisely how much fuel a citation X burns on that flight.

You can convert any car to run on electric power. The smart way would be to take a light
car like the Volkswagen or the Honda..and use solar panels to charge it..see also Tesla Roadster..no more pollution and FREE ENERGY!!

There cars were great! Just add the lithium-ion batteries and you have 21st Century technology. It was only ten years ago. There were also solar charge station around the state. When republicans ended the zero emission law the cars were scrapped. Bush again!!!!

In the 1920's they had v8's that got over 70 miles to the gallon. if you search the net you may find an old press release from one of the auto companies saying that by 1930 they would have 100 miles to the gallon. Tom Hanks owns a share in a fractional ownership company. Tom Hanks rides in a Cessna Citation X from New York to Los Angeles all by himself. In that one flight, he burns well over 12000 lbs of fuel. I know this because I am very good friends with one of the pilots that works for that company and once flew Tom Hanks from New York to L.A.

70 - 80 miles! Geese that wouldnt get me to the coast for the day let alone go on holiday. I dont understand why electric cars cant have an alternator to recharge the battery like normal fuel cars?

First, coal fired power plants are more efficient energy-generators than the equivalent number of gas powered cars because of their size and dynamics. Second, a lot of energy is currently wasted at night when no one is using it , so the cars could act as a buffer, redistributing energy to when it's needed.
