To Lifeisshort214. I enjoy things so much more when others make me think. In the beginning Elizabeth's duty was to her father. Duty goes right down the tube when love or sex comes into play. I have been told that the drive for it is as powerful as the drive for food. As we see here some people will even kill for it. The rest of us forgive the murder and applaud the victory without a sign of moral highground. I love this movie but I have though about it in more depth since I read your comment.

Too bad sweet and dutiful aren't characteristics that are valued in this movie. Charles' duty leaves him lonely for seven years yielding him no reward. Connie passes up her own chances for marriage by doing her duty and helping her sister's husband.

  • Charles' dad is an ...

Charles' dad is an interesting character, an irresponsible libertine but not quite a villian. In this scene he is rude, but not intentionally insulting. I like that he is not hypocritical in his treatment of Miss Laurier. He doesn't try to shame her or treat like a whore. He seems to respect her for her unflinching attitude.
