She is to sing Zerbinetta in 2008! Her 40th year of professional singing! There is a wonderful spectral analysis of Gruberova's voice in the Mad Scene from Lucia (I believe) which compares her voice/partials to other sopranos - quite interesting!

The steel in her voice IS projection! But by emphasising...possibly OVER-emphasising those top partials of her sound, she does sacrifice some of the warmth and depth and roundness that could be present. Still, it is possibly that extreme use of head voice timbre that gave her the upper range extension that, if the programme of the Staatsoper does not lie, is still present today. If memory serves, she still sings Zerbinetta!!

No, she actually debuted in 1968! The 'steel' in the voice aids in projection - her voice fills opera houses of all sizes.

She had her big success in 1976 at the Salzburg Festival, and had been a member of the wiener Staatsoper for some years, and had previously made her debut in Bratislava.. She can't have started singing professionally in the early 80's.

I'm just going by what the video had on it. It's from a program called "Profile" which I believe airs (or aired) on Austrian television. I believe she's only sung 3 Semiramides 90,92,01.

This would not be early in her career. Maybe somewhere around mid career but I think she started singing professionally in at least the very early 80's if not in the 70's

I find her a truly exceptional talent; at times it seems like if she got the best of Sutherland(speed and high notes) and mixed with the best of Caballe( legato and pianissimi)

Early career point? If this is truly from 1990, she'd been on the stage for atleast 20 years. She certainly has an extraordinarily bright voice, and her technique does emphasise this, but it's not as though she's slamming it out her nose, it's a balanced sound considering her fach. Good for her, another impressive performance.
