Richard Dawkins is the Charles Simonyi Professor of the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University. He was voted Britains leading public intellectual by readers of Prospect magazine and was named one of Time Magazines "100 Most Influential People" for 2007. Among his books are "The Selfish Gene", "The Blind Watchmaker", "Climbing Mount Improbable", "Unweaving the Rainbow", "A Devils Chaplain", "The Ancestors Tale", and the New York Times best seller "The God Delusion".

Science is useful but that is not all it is. Science can be uplifting, thrilling, life-enhancing. Originally broadcast on Britain's Channel 4 in 1996, "Break the Science Barrier" follows the Oxford Biologist Richard Dawkins as he meets with people who have experienced the wonders of science first-hand.

We meet the astronomer who first discovered pulsars, the geneticist who invented DNA fingerprinting, a scientist who discovered a protein that causes cancer, and others. Richard Dawkins interviews famous admirers of science such as Douglas Adams and David Attenborough, and asks them why science means so much to them. We also see how dangerous ignorance of science can be in classrooms, courts, and beyond.

With so many expressing paranormal beliefs and ignorance of science, Dawkins encourages viewers to contrast these ancient superstitions with the power and beauty of our scientific achievements and understanding.

    smart comment Antarblue. It's definitely to do with the worldwide money system. I don't know enough about Dawk to be honest and his 'foundation for science and reason' now accpeting lots of facebook donations for example. I still have confidence in him and think (that he thinks at least) that his heart is in the right place even though he may be slightly misguided at times (not to mention his somewhat acerbic fanclub)

    To be fair, califoniania, actually it was slow at first, but it's an exponential curve, so it's moving incredibly fast now.

    500 years ago, in the Dark Ages when religion ruled the world, it was unfortunately stagnant. Horray for free thought and science we're not in that theocratic mess anymore. :-)

    Quantum entanglement sounds cool but it can not be used for communication. Otherwise it would be great for wireless :D

    Derren sells movies where he does some tricks and reveals them fully. They are amazingly elaborate and elegant. In one trick he says (to the audience) he uses mindreading techniques to figure out which card a participant have chosen.

    Point being, you DO make contact even if it's not 100% of the time.
