this was the one redeeming thing in the movie, i wish the had worked in to the trilogy how jarjar dies

Actually it's like this: Yoda has the strongest overall Force power; Mace Windu is the greatest swordsman still in the Order(He & Dooku were sparring partners/equals), and Qui-Gon has the most overall talent(until Anakin)+ vision(i.e., he wasn't on the Council, thus wasn't bogged down by politics/political intrigue--would've seen through Palpatine's plots.) That, plus the secret of the Whills makes him the most powerful.

Qui-Gon was the one who discovered the secret of the Whills--i.e., how to exist beyond death ("Force Ghost")& taught it to both Yoda & Obi-Wan. Plus, Sidious considered Naboo a Pyrrhic victory in that Maul killed Qui-Gon who was not on the Council & would've easily discovered his plot.
