    'keeping up with the joneses' means basically keeping up with your neighbours, effectively

    'jones' being a generic surname that could apply to anyone

    for example, if your neighbour gets a nice new car, then you'd do the same, to show you're as well off as them

    hence 'but you're too busy following the crowd'

    it's about social competition, and the need to blend in and be as good (or better) than everyone else
