Head-shave ceremony is a ritual of surrendering hairs of a person to the god. This is called "Mundan" (spelled as moon-done). Mundan is symbolic presentation of surrendering your head to the god, a sacrifice to the god to avoid any bad/fatal events during kids life.

This tradition might be originated by the fact that death rate of new born babies was high in ancient ages.
