"Hello and welcome to this Youtube video on how to make a Russet bear. The Pattern for this bear will be in the side bar"

"To begin with, cut the pattern and trace it onto the back of the fur, with the fur going from up to down. This makes sure all the fur on your bear is going the right way."

"Once you've drawn the pattern onto the fur, it's now time to cut out each piece.
When you do cut out these pieces, make sure you leave a 2-3mm gap outside the edge of the lines, don't cut on the lines as you'll need that when you sew it together."

*Not shown in the video, but the foot and paw pads are drawn on and cut from a second fabric. Satin in this case, but you could just as easily use felt or cotton.*

"Now you have all your pieces cut out, the next thing to do is to start sewing them together.
The first piece we'll sew together will be the torso, matching the patterns pieces face to face. You can now start sewing. It's important to do this properly, otherwise you'll get a big mess."

"Stitch around the lines on the back of the pattern. Make sure you go all the way around the lines leaving a gap on the "Back" about an inch long. That way you'll leave a space to turn the torso inside-out and stuff it later."

"As you can see here, I've left a gap big enough for me to turn the entire torso inside-out or right-side-in and then stuff."

"Now we come to the leg.
In this part we're going to sew the satin pad to the fur of the leg. For this we'll put the satin's showing face against the fur."

"Once you've finished sewing on the pad, you can then finish sewing up the rest on the arm/leg. Make sure you leave a gap to turn it inside out and stuff later."

"In this case, to turn it inside out, the leg is too narrow for me to effectively get my fingers in there, so I'm using a pair of scissors to push it through."

"Now that the leg is ready for stuffing and stitching later, we can put it aside and finish the rest of the bear."

"Now we come to the arm. With the arm you have this extruding piece here; this flat edge is what you are first going to sew to the paw pad. The paw pad itself has got a flat edge that will match to it.
Remember matching like to like surfaces or in this case, fur to satin. Then continue sewing around the curve and up the arm."

"This is the Gusset (Top) for the head. The tip at the back goes to the back of the bears head, and the lumpy bit at the front goes to the front of the bears head.
Matching the tip to the back here, and the lump to the front, you're going to sew around the side.
Do this on both sides of the Gusset, and once that's done you can sew down the front of the head, leaving a space at the bottom along the bottom edge. This will be used for turning inside-out."

"Now we come to stuffing. I've started off by stuffing the leg in this case."

"Now because the leg is so narrow, I can't get my fingers down all the way to the edge and into the feet, so here I'm using a pen to push the rest of the stuffing down."

"Once you've stuffed it to your satisfaction and it's as firm as you'd like or as soft as you'd like, you can then sew up the gap."

"For the eyes I'm using these "Safety" eyes I got from John Lewis. They basically consist of the eye pin and a washer."

"The washer will go over the end of the pin once it's inside the bears head.
Position the eye where you think it'd look nice and push it through the fur. You may need to snip the fabric in the right place first; Washer on the inside, Eye on the outside."

"Now, it's very important to position the eyes and ears carefully, because the final position of them will determine the personality of the bear. Too high or too low and it'll just look silly, but just right and you've got a cute bear."

"You may need to cut some of the fur from around the eyes, just so you can see them.
And now we can sew the rest of the bear together.
This bear, I'm sewing the arms, legs and head on. But you may want to use press studs if you're going to give it to a child. That way, if the child does decide to pull the legs, head and arms to pieces, there's no harm done because they can be popped back on again."

"And here we have the final bear.
One Russet bear.
Dark Grey fur; Black satin hands and feet.
Easily movable, and behind him is his partner."

"I hope you enjoyed this video, now go and make your own.

Have a nice day"
