I thought sailboats only had the right of way when the sails are hoisted only.

The ferry has the right of way b/c it's state owned and there is a law stating no boat can come within 100 yards of it.

Your a fool, the "Sail" boat had no privilege, as she was opperating under power. A alteration of course to starboard accross the bows of the larger boat was madness. Sail boats acturaly have very few privileges people need to know the rules before they open their mouths.

Technicaly it wasn't a sailing boat because no sails were set and it was proceeding, under power. Both vessels should be passing port to port,(left sides towards each other) which *was* the situation until the skipper of the yacht decided to cross the bows of the ferry.. Bad move.

Hmmm...I wonder if the crew of the yacht survived... [??]

Unbelievable... there is no excuse for what that yacht did. They had no rights at all in that situation.
