It's all got to do with direct connection to the Raw Nerve.I've pretty much seen what Australia can dish up in terms of "the Blues"..and of all the hundreds of guys that do the Solo Bluesman thing..there are only a handful that touch the Nerve..Ivan Zar and Hat Fitz being two of them.Check out Big Joe Louis for somebody who's got the connection to the nerve, but is a middleclass white guy from London..Check out Seasick Steve for another man connected to the Nerve...

I guess where I am coming from, is that in that case white american music can never be regarded as "authentic". They can never own a 1952 telecaster, serve time in Angola penitentiary or meet Robert Johnson and the devil at the crossroads at midnight...they are the dispossessed...

that is a valid point, but think of it as in he walked the talk giving his words more weight, say in comparison to someone reading the bible and someone hearing jesus speak.

Now this is really interesing and as a European I am fascinated by this phenomenon. Surely the fact that a person has been in prison- ( presumably for having broken the law?) -or has walked from one place to another place- doesn't necessarily make his music any more "real"?

I would say its more real because this is the music that grew out of their experiences in extreme racial and social injustice. I'm a black man from the south, but even I have never lived a day like these people lived. This man spent time in Aberdeen Prison, so the words coming out of his mouth are first hand. When BB King(Booker's cousin) says that he's a bluesman, its real. He walked from MS to Memphis for his first job. That's real. That's authentic. That is suffering for your art.

I think it's because the white boy would be an imitator of this style of music and this guy White is one of the inventors and developers of this kinda music.

it's more authentic because a 27 year old white guy did not record it that way 50 some odd years ago. Don't get me wrong, I don't think that white people cannot play the blues and play it well, but this is more real because these guys are from where it all came. Steve vai is a great guitarist and everything, but his versions always sound cheap in comparison to something like this.

Why do we consider this to be any more "real" or "authentic" or whatever, than say some 27 year old white guy playing exactly the same thing on a Yamaha pacifica? . I don't mean any disrespect to Bukka White I'm just interested in american concepts of "authenticity" .

i beleive that none of these comments are racist although they may be considered that, and its cool to copy other's music, i would not say it was ripped off.

Wow this is awesome but I'd love to see Steve Vai playing this on a '52 telecaster through a 1978 Mesa Boogie 30w amp, I bet he would be shredding and everything, that would be just so cool and awesome.
