This is a clip taken from the film Speed and Angels. Every pilot that lands aboard a carrier is graded. If they don't achieve the minimum grade set by the Tomcat squadron then they will fail.

Thanks to unprecedented access granted by the Navy, Director Peyton Wilson captured and created the most intimate film ever made on fighter pilots. Inspired by the passion of two young Navy officers she encountered, Peyton followed Jay and Meagan as they chased their childhood dream of becoming naval aviators flying the F-14 Tomcat. Their two and a half year journey takes them through dogfights in the Nevada desert, night landings on aircraft carriers off the Atlantic coast, and eventually to the biggest challenge young officers face: wartime deployment to Iraq.

  • It's a signal used ...

It's a signal used between aircraft carrier traffic controllers and pilots. When a pilot is asked to "call the ball," the controller wants to know if he or she has clearly seen the guide lights for landing on the carrier.

  • what does it mean ...

what does it mean when she says "161 Tomcat ball, five-seven?" Im guessing that 161 is the name of the airplane that she's flying, tomcat ball is obviously because she's flying a tomcat, but i wonder what "five-seven" means? is it because she's 5,7 miles out from the ship?

(regarding the 600,600 700 said by the rio, i think that is the rate of descent, like 500fps, but im not sure.. somebody correct me! )

The number 2 sexiest thing a woman can do is fly a fighter aircraft. The number 1 sexiest thing a woman can do is land that fighter on an aircraft carrier.

  • It's the RIO ...

It's the RIO calling out the rate of descent for the pilot. Landing speed for the F-14 was probably around 130 knots.

This was probably the most intense scary part of my career as a Naval aviator, but I had it harder, the Super Hornet is more squirrelly.
