Synopsis
Set in Harlem 1987 -Monster's Ball producer Lee Daniels , takes his adaptation of author Sapphire's best-selling novel about an overweight, illiterate African-American teen from Harlem who discovers an alternate path in life after she begins attending a new school after years of mistreatment, confusion and low-esteem. Clareece "Precious" Jones at 16, is pregnant with her second child by her father and constantly finds herself the victim of an evil, abusive and manipulative mother (Monique). Clareece shows little regards for her future until discovering that she has been accepted into an alternative school where she finds acceptance and hope. There, with a little help from a sympathetic teacher (Paula Patton) and a gentle nurse (Lenny Kravitiz), she receives her salvation a journey out of destruction, pain and powerlessness which leads her to growth, love and self-determination. Mo'nique, Mariah Carey and Chyna Layne co-stars in this inspirational drama featuring the debut performance of screen newcomer Gabourey "Gabbie" Sidibe. -The Halimah Show
