Thank you for this post as I have always wanted to see a time-lapse version of the process. Nice to have the horizon line for comparison but a little spooky to see that much flex! Don't the counter weights on the back move?

  • the reason the ...

the reason the crane is bending is becaues the weight of the section is to great for the cranes boom at that length so you see the operator bring it in closer to the crane may stabalize. you can do this yourself by taking a small (2lb) weight and extending your arm out you will notice that you will start to go off balance and your arm will want to fall. its simple physics the closer the weight is brought in the better the crane can handle the weight

one other thing, notice how the crane bends to the left when hoisting a section at 26-29 sec., THATS CRAZY, that looks like to much flex, but im not an engineer. can someone explain this. because i know S**t gets heavier than those sections are!

I've wondered about this in the past, very interesting. Thanks for posting.

They were building one near me recently (diferent method, another telescopic crane was used) and I've really got to hand it to those guys who've got the nerve to go climbing about on thin bits of metal away up there. I know they've got lifelines etc, butI certainly still couldn't do it!

  • ive been in many ...

ive been in many cranes [as im an operator in london england] and we call it a jacking frame. Remember the crane can only go at average 85meters high before it will need tieing to a building with a collar that goes round the tower. 5 Cranes have collapsed during jacking in the last couple of years and though i still sit up there when the jacking is commencing i still think its another step to far for man kind. To much room for human error.
