A message to Canadians from Michael McCain, President & CEO of Maple Leaf Foods regarding the listeria recall.
"The closing of three regional labs also reduced the ministry's analytical ability. With the closing of these labs, which provided routine analysis of water quality for municipalities, the municipalities were forced to seek services from private labs, if they could afford it. The government cancelled 400,000 tests it had been conducting each year, downloading this service to municipalities with only eight weeks notice."

The ministry's ability to monitor and analyze pollution was reduced and an increased emphasis placed on industry self-monitoring. The number of water quality monitoring facilities in the province was reduced from 700 in 1991 to 200 in 1997, with no facilities in operation north of Barrie. The same year, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs terminated the testing of pesticide samples."

By jcameron111 [Affiliate User] 1219703877 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThis article about the roots of the disaster in Walkerton, Ontario could be re-written almost word-for-word about the planned cuts to Canada's Food Inspection Agency. Just replace 'water' with 'meat', 'environment' with 'food safety', and then-Premier 'Harris' with 'Prime Minister Harper' (many of the other players haven't changed) and the story remains the same...

Correct, McCain and Maple Leaf foods, ARE accountable. How negligent were they?
Can it be corrected and the public safe? Do we wash up 30,000 jobs and pensions?
Will processed foods be served again in Canada?
maybe if i spoke to you in person you would change you mind!!go back to the farm retard!!
By sinisterskid [Affiliate User] 1219703327 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethis is funny!!and everyone read this!!i worked for a company that sucked rotting pig guts out of a maple leaf plant in lethbridge, alberta meanwhile there was fresh pork being sawed up beside it and some one on here keeps on deleting this!!my guess it its jcameron111the truth does S**k !!

By zipobob [Affiliate User] 1219703148 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveYou amaze me. You get smarter and smarter with time and drinks. Yes, maybe my grade 5 vocabulary is somewhat overwhelming, but you are entertaining just the same. When you sharpen up and want to talk with the big people. (Without your little potty mouth), I'll let you call me.
Until then take your nap and maybe you'll be a big boy in the morning.
point being. That Mccain and Maple Leaf foods, ARE accountable. The arguement that they aren't is almost like saying hiring a hitman diverts the blame to only the one pulling the trigger.
By Snoozer24 [Affiliate User] 1219702895 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removereply to ionesothere,
While being quite convenient that it was in fact a subsidiary of Maple Leaf foods, this fact also sheds light on another looming problem facing consumers. Companies often use subsidiaries in order to bypass regulation and avoid accountability. I ask, who is making the profit off of the subsidiaries? Who is gaining tax breaks from the creation of subsidiaries? and why, other than financial and regulatory reasons, would a company subsidize in the first place?
A blast from the past, from the FIRST time voters were stupid enough to put Harper's neocon cabinet in power in Canada...

By jcameron111 [Affiliate User] 1219702161 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethe plant where the products were recalled is actually operated by maple leaf consumer foods which is an independently run company of maple leaf foods.rick young is the president of maple leaf consumer foods.they have there own managers, supervisors and quality control people.i do not think michael mccain is to blame for what was happening in the problem plant.

Slaughterhouses are terrible inhumane place, we are all better off being vegans.
Mcdonalds and Maple Leaf others big clients are going to suffer dearly for this. I suspect McDonalds will place more stringent controls on their suppliers after this.
Some good may actually come out of this accident.
Unless you are one of the one who died.
and who cares about the employees, I can never understand anyone who works with blood & guts all day
