This is a recording of a live performance given by Williams in Berlin. I've noticed that on other YT vids of this recording, there is an argument raging about Williams' credentials as a classical guitarist and how he compares to Spanish players. I don't know about that, I'm not an expert in this area, but Williams' bio and reportoire is impressive by any standard (check out his official site or one of the many 3rd-party sites on the net). He studied under Andres Segovia from age 12 and later attended the Royal College of Music in London. He has collaborated with Paco Pena and Julian Bream, and has been intrumental in bringing the works of Augustin Barrios back to popularity, stating his belief that Barrios was the greatest composer of guitar music. It's widely believed that Williams is English, but technically he is actually Australian. He was born 1941 in Melbourne to an English father and Australian-Chinese mother.
I believe he wrote this second movement when he learned their child either died or was stillborn. The whole concierto is so very beautiful...moving from hope to sadnes to hope again. The second piece is so moving, it brings tears to my eyes everytime I hear it (if played well that is)

An absolute delight. Written when his wife was in hospital for surgery, I believe. Senora
Rodrigo's heatbeat is included. Hype perhaps
but when my wife went into hospital I had his playing in the back of my mind.
Hi, I'm spanish and I don't say "spaniard players are superior". I must say Williams play is great but adding more flourishes where, in the score they're not, it make low quality because it seems more gypsy-alike rather than spanish classical piece. Narciso Yepes and Kaori Muraji plays are the best ones I've heard so far. And, before you say it, I don't like Paco de Lucía play... it's more him than classical (even when Rodrigo said it was the best performance he heard of Concierto de Aranjuez..)

So for example, Barrios is greater than Andrew York, Nikita Koshkin, Roland Dyens, etc., but not necessarily Rodrigo, Britten, etc. (who I don't think are classical guitarists).

People who claim that Spanish born players are superior are being nationalistic. To each his own for personal taste but you will not find a more technically proficient player from any part of the world. Just ask the Spanish guitarists that have worked with him.
