DANGEROUS DEMO! Can't get liquid nitrogen? Then make your own version by using Dry Ice. Note that this demonstration involves several major safety hazards, and should only be performed by skilled professionals.

Note that dry ice comes from companies listed in your local yellow pages. Some welder supply stores carry it. In Seattle, you can find it in the seafood section of QFC neighborhood grocery.

  • If you want to get ...

If you want to get even colder, try ether instead of ethanol, in a well-ventilated room.

Dry ice in itself is around -78 C as it melts. Adding diethyl ether to it can lower the melting point below -100 C. As it does so, the temperature of the mixture drops to the new melting point - a fact often used in making ice-cream the traditional way by mixing water ice and table salt to create a slurry that cools down to -20 C.

  • Dry ice isn't that ...

Dry ice isn't that bad, since it partly insulates itself by spewing out gas. The main danger is caused by exploding containers.

Everybody loves to give dire warnings about dry ice, yet a hot potato fresh from the oven is far more dangerous, and a lit match is totally lethal. If people fear dry ice more than they fear a child's birthday candle, then something is very wrong. (Candles have started many deadly fires.)

Hmmm, I wonder if dry ice accidents have killed anyone at all.
