Yes The Cure and Joy division were a little before REM but REM popularized alternative and was a big part in the transition from new wave to alternative.

dude what is hell college rock is just another name for alternative rock basiclly they only named them that for a little while because they were on college stations they are alternative though and yes I know Cure was before R.E.M. and I dont know what your talking about ONLY real alternative bands and crap were like 2 bands please, theres Janes Addiction, Smashing Pumpkins and so on they were a bunch of REAL alternative bands so I dont know why you only named 2 fromn the 90s

Everything started with Joy Divsion...R.E.M was just a band...collage rock, not inde or alternative..The ONLY real alternative music during the 90's came from Madchester and Shoegazers..And the Cure came way before REM!

what they are considered Art rock I've never ever heard of the Velvet Underground being alt or Bowie they were part of that experimental rock stuff and I guess The Cure did form before R.E.M. but The Cure didnt sound like we all know how they sound on songs like Just like heaven and stuff like that back then
