PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING!

A video presentation by Weinlein and Dwyer that investigates Tim O'Brien's perspective of the Vietnam War through his work, The Things They Carried. Submitted for Mr. Mody's American Experience class at Burnt Hills HS. Please keep in mind that despite some the content and parts the lyrics, this site (and all those connected to my account) is intended for use by primarily high school students. This means I will not approve comments with vulgarity or with questionable, derogatory, or inflammatory content. You are free to comment on whether or not you like/agree with the video and/or the novel it is attempting to summarize. Criticism is fair game in my eyes, as long as it is insightful and in good taste. The song is "This is War" by Smile Empty Soul.

  • We didn't go into ...

We didn't go into Vietnam for profit. We sent in some advisors in the early 60s to assist our allies, and then the NVA attacked one of our destroyers, and that sparked a major war.

  • My mistake. ...

    My mistake. Swedish Hockey team.

And I agree. I am not saying the U.S. and its citizens are not culpable for their/our actions, but you can't lump a whole nation's people together under a single generalized morality. Whether it makes the citizens sparkle of not doesn't matter.

  • don't mistake ...

don't mistake switzerland for sweden ^^

and you're both kinda right...though one shouldn't hate a people because of what a minority of them did, it's still a question of mentality whether an unjust war is supported by a nations citizens or not...

  • I know that the ...

I know that the comparison of a dirty hockey team to war is illegitimate at best, but so is the number of gross generalizations about an entire country of people that fly around. That type of close mindedness breeds unfounded hate towards people based not on character but on geography.

  • So you hate all ...

So you hate all Germans because of Hitler, all Japanese, all Iraqi's? That sort of generalization is ridiculous. You might disagree with the actions of the U.S. and its government, or even the people that support it, but its like me saying that the Swiss hockey team has been dirty in the last two Olympics, so now I hate all Swedes.

  • Considering the ...

Considering the picture americans give in the parts of world that do not have TV, it is not wierd people hate americans and america. And soon (or if it has not already happened) me myself will hate US (I'm swedish). Just because of all the illegal, un just and dirty wars that US have been, officially and in officially, in.

Never forget Vietnam, Iraq or what was going down in South America! Question, will US ever appologise for them?

U should say mostly feel bad for the south vietnamese people and the US soldiers. South Vietnam was used by the US gov. as a pond to achieve the relationship with China to contain USSR. The US soldiers were just tools.

  • Given the age of ...

Given the age of the basic draftee, (19 years old), that's a very astute comment. Also, since the each solider's tour was only 12 months (13 for Marines), by the time a solider knew how to do his job, a completely green replacement (FNG) would come in and have to start all over again. VERY few actually wanted to be there.

  • Absolutely wrong. ...

Absolutely wrong. War is always regrettable, but it's NOT always wrong. Not everything can be resolved by talking as much as we all wish it were. But then you're a typical anti-American teenager, what else can I expect from someone with such a juvenile PoV?

  • While I appreciate ...

While I appreciate your empathy for the Vietnamese, you should really look a bit deeper into the reasons WHY the US was there and who was there before us, meaning the French, Japanese, French (1st time) & the Chinese were all occupiers of Vietnam before the US. It didn't come down to a choice of attacking Russia and the Communist Chinese were more involved than the USSR.

DEATH and WAR are bad, no matter WHO commits either - the US are WRONG to think they can go into any god-damn country and kill people for profit, but its not like it matters, america is a nation dieing from the inside out, unless some compassion and care comes into their gavernment, their civilization is going to COLLAPSE ON ITSELF!!!

i mostly feel bad for the vietnamese people. THEY had to endure all of this just because the US government wanted to fight communism and vienam was safer to attack than russia. And now history repeats itself in Irak.

I wish the US government would stop thinking it's their job to be the world's police and just spend all this money on the people who really need it ON THE AMERICAN SOIL!

who's to say the young men sent over there against their own volition weren't victims also? and the majority of us troops in combat never saw or even killed any of the enemy. Tim O'brien mentions only ever seeing and killing one enemy soldier himself

We all need to look at it this way its over and has been for a long time now so arguing over it now is point less, all we can do is learn from it. All we can do is remember those ones that fought and died doing what was asked of them. GOD BLESS them and there familys.
