The head doesn't really 'stay alive' after it's cut off, but it may move for a bit because of nerve firings in the brain. There was actually a guy, I believe he was a doctor, who tried to talk to the heads after execution, to see if they were really alive or not. Of course even if they did understand they wouldn't be able to answer, because there is no air coming from the lungs XD

My strong feeling is that Ranucci was guilty. He told police officers the almost exact location of the knife with which the poor little girl suffered death. For me, this is a proof, even if the police report was not perfect. Gilles Perrault wrote a book on this story but his arguments are not conclusive. I think Ranucci was not alone and has tried to protect somebody else.
