  • There's a book I ...

There's a book I recommend a lot. It's "Party of One" by Anali Rufus. It will help give you a fuller perspective on this. So will the work of Joseph Campbell. The modern world IS neurosis in many respects, and it doesn't help when we use other people as crutches. BUT, while some journeys can only be taken alone, you are right that artificially imposed isolation is not healthy. Dena may be in that category, or she may simply be voicing a healthy concern over the choices she is making.

  • Casting oneself as ...

Casting oneself as the misunderstood hero is kind of a neurosis in and of itself. Striving for excellence is a fantastic thing, but one must always accept the costs to themselves and others. I'm not sure that these singular journeys necessarily make the world a better place, though.

  • You are right. I've ...

You are right. I've been where she is. On a mission, other people were a distraction. I know that sounds anti-social or selfish, but like the anchorites of old, sometimes a job can only be accomplished by a party of one. It's not that you don't care about others, but you feel that the price you pay will ultimately pay off for the world, not just your self. The hero's journey is often a lonely one, but one that makes the world a better place.

  • Great set, ...

Great set, ChiLatino. Thanks. These women are awesome, and this film lets you see them more as complete human beings. The people in their lives are very fortunate. Fbbs are forces of nature and they can inspire us all to push forward our own horizons of self-creation. The Dena portion saddened me a bit, but I think the best and strongest of us struggle through the long dark night of the soul. At the end of that struggle is bliss, and I pray Dena finds it. She deserves to.

  • She does, but I ...

She does, but I think it's by choice. I think that sometimes women who are driven to achieve like she is give off a very strong vibe that they don't really want or need anyone else in their lives. By her own admission, Dena structures her life so that she has no time to meet people or cultivate friendships. Maybe if she put out a vibe to others that she really wanted them in her life things would change, but I think she wants it that way.
