Once I had a little girl, sometimes I think about her,
But, buddy, you know shes not really there.
When memories do call, I just, I just cant live without her
But tryin all the time is so hard to bear.

Chorus
Heartbreaker, cant take her,
Heartbreaker, bringing me down.
Heartbreaker, cant take her,
Heartbreaker, bringing me down.

I dont cry no more, I live while Im flying,
But Ill think back, and you can hear me say:

Chorus

  • Yes. Mark Farner ...

Yes. Mark Farner and Don Brewer were the showmen of GFR, especially here. But, it's Mel Schacher's unbelievable bass line that powers this song! He and John Entwistle were pioneers and brought the bass out from the background. Mel's one of the most underrated bassists ever.

  • Sorry I keep fuckin ...

Sorry I keep fuckin' commentin' on this. The guys seem to always call themselves a garage band. And Mark, even after the GFR heyday, he's said he's wanted to become a better guitar player. I know he's been slammed in the press during his career (he seems to be getting a bit more critical respect nowadays), and again I'm a non-musician, but I feel he and the band were ultimately modest. They've obviously made people happy. "Rock & Roll American Style/It's gonna be around for awhile!"

  • This is my favorite ...

This is my favorite live version of this tune that I've heard. Farner's voice is completely on, and the dude, I know that critically he's not usually rated high or even mentioned, and I don't play guitar, but outside of Tommy Bolin, the guy is an incredible guitarist. I've heard all the Funk stuff, and I feel that I can just hear his progression into an outstanding lead guitarist, especially around this period. I completely dig the Craig Frost GFR! Mark plays vicious guitar on "El Salvador!"

This song is so damn good it gives me the chills everytime I hear it. When I hear this song it kinda depresses me that I'm single. But anyway, nobody ever sang like Mark Farner. The prettiest voice I've ever heard.
