SA FLIGHT from Jeddah to Riyadh on 10.03.08. Damage on right wing of 777 just a few minutes before landing at 900 m altitude. Hydraulic lines cut and fluids are draining huge hole in the top of the wing. This looks like mechanical failure of certain parts - it happend with a very loud bang right next to my window.

    Spoiler may not be the appropriate term for it. Spoiler can only be referred to cars. Well the spoilers use is Downforce. So it might point out a use of the wings flap.

    Sorry ! what u said abt the flaps function is not true ! the flaps do 2 different jobs , when they r extended for take off they increase the wing chamber ( the length from fron to rear ) of the wing to assist in lift , and in landing it acts as speed brake by adding more drag with the wind and also decreases the reqired speed for landing . and in all cases air pressure is higher at the lower side of the wing than the upper side and thats how we get lift .

    nice piloting!
    it seems that one of the spoiler failed due to whatever reason, and it creates strong downward force on the right wing!
    check on that inboard aileron, the pilot did a great job on keeping the plane level

    Awesome video and awesome experiences!
    B777 is the best airplane ever build!

    Offcoarse! This wing that was damaged is very rare in KSA. And also... Dangerous! Coz of the aerodynamics of the left wing. From the video... The flap is letting the air up. This is equivalent to an increase in drag and therefore... The left wing has a heavy load of air pressing down on the left wing. So the pressure on both wings are different. Risky!
