JAS 39 Gripen

Actually it does need an upgrade but mostly because it does'nt have so much space for armament. But luckily for sweden SAAB is already at it and with the upgrade that is to come they will increase the output of Gripens engines by 30% (wich i personally think is a bit unnecessary since it's already one of the fastest fighter jets out there) and increase the space for armaments. It is and always will be; a big engine with wings and guns ^^

Yeah my bad. what I ment was that its in need of a major uppgrade in not so long to keep up with Eurofighter and JSF. And when this uppgrade comes, the Swedish air foce has not chosen to uppgrade theirs as they know the plane is inferior.

The swedish airforce uses the JAS39 Gripen today and we have been using it for the past years. Check facts before you say anything. The gripen is not in need of a current update and it is still impressive.

Their job is only to hang on until NATO arrives. But yeah, the base in bodø is pretty stupid. In fact our defence is pretty much non existant now as there has been continous cutbacks for years. Not long ago a general major went to the media saying the army could only protect one suburb of Oslo if attacked because of all the cutbacks. Our government is retards, wish we had people like you guys who actually put some effort in your armed forces.

There are several sources that confirm this. You can google for: spring flag may 2007 Italy. Or why not google for: swedish air force red flag. The Gripen is not such a crappy plane as some norwegians would like it to be :D But then your air defense guys don´t seem to understand that unless you do it the swedish way your air force will be wiped out the first day if Russia attacks. Building a big base at Bodö seems silly to me. Big bases are for big guys. Small guys have to be smart to win.

F16 is from the 70's. F18 is a plane designed for air craft carriers. Besides, given the right situation any plane could take down any plane. DO you have any sources for this exercise you mention?

Afaik we have ordered over 200 and they will be upgraded to/are C/D class and will become E, or if the future orders are E. I think the upgrades was supposed to raise the end of life from 2020 to 2040 or whatever. Not that I would consider it new in 2040 ... Yeah, I know that, stupid Goths! Yes its old and outdated. Not even the Swedish air force has ordered the Jas. Its already in need of a major uppdate, and its going to send the cost sky rocketing. HAd it been a decade earlier, the JAS would have been quite impressive. Kudos on the Gotland class but thats a sub not a plane :P

Old? Seems to be one of the newer ones to me, except F-22, T-50/PAK FA/MFI 1.44 but neither of those exist yet.. The F-2 and J-10 maybe but are they really superior to JAS-39? True about the stealth, but then no plane are totally invisible, so it's just a matter of more and less stealth, not true stealth. And our sub Gotland owned vs american fleet due to it's stealthness instead so ;D

You are quite correct about that, because the plane is a 4th generation plane (just like the Typhoon, Rafale M etc..). The thing is that it is totally surreal that the US is ever going to attack a country that is using the Gripen. Also, the US is the only nation with 5th generation fighters. So if you come up with a list of all the planes used in todays air forces, you should find the Gripen in the top ten on the list of better planes.

To kill. Something most planes do better than the Gripen. Lets be completely honest here, its design is old, it has to rely on a whole team of people communicating with you via radio and it has no stealth what so ever.

Before you ask me that; try to think through what the very purpose of a jetfighter is.

eeh what... norway hasn't decided yet. JAS 39, F-35 and eurofighter is still competing for the contract. And what do you mean? "a step to a big nation"? OK, it's a nice plane but don't get overly excited.
