Big Rock Candy Mountain

Oh the buzzin' of the bees
And the cigarette trees
The soda water fountain
Where the lemonade springs
And the bluebird sings
In that big rock candy mountain

On a summers day
In the month of May
A burly bum come hikin'
Down a shady lane
Near the sugar cane
He was looking for his likin'
As he strolled along
He sung a song
Of a land of milk and honey
Where a bum can stay
For many a day
And he won't need any money

Oh the buzzin' of the bees
And the cigarette trees
The soda water fountain
Where the lemonade springs
And the bluebird sings
In that big rock candy mountain

In the Big Rock Candy Mountain
The cops have wooden legs
The bulldogs all have rubber teeth
And the hens lay soft-boiled eggs
The farmer's trees are full of fruit
The barns are full of hay
I want to go where there ain't no snow
Where the sleet don't fall
And the wind don't blow
In that big rock candy mountain

Oh the buzzin' of the bees
And the cigarette trees
The soda water fountain
Where the lemonade springs
And the bluebird sings
In that big rock candy mountain

Oh the buzzin' of the bees
At the cigarette trees
The soda water fountain
Where the lemonade springs
And the bluebird sings
In that big rock candy mountain

  • The original words ...

The original words by Harry McClintock were about a hobo's paradise. With "lakes of stew & whiskey, too" and "springs of alcohol come trickling down the rocks." This Burl Ives version has been cleaned up for kids. If you get the soundtrack from "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" you can hear the original sung by Harry McClintock himself (recorded in 1928).

  • Yup, I find them ...

Yup, I find them still, around the stores where my Grandma lives, I like little country towns that just don't care what's politically correct or not.

  • Still? Candy ...

Still? Candy cigarettes were around when I was a kid in the late 1960s - early 1970s, and I can still remember how they tasted, but I figured they were too politically incorrect to be around today.

  • No one sold out ...

No one sold out Seeger to McCarthy since McCarthy was a senator not a member of the House of Representatives. The House Unamerican Activities Committee was never chaired by McCarthy. McCarthy was charged with finding communists inside the United States government only. Not the general populace. That was done by the House. McCarthy was never involved with their investigations. Read a history book from time to time.

  • The original ...

The original version is far better. Burl Ives needs to take a few tips from "Haywire" Mack about singing bum songs.

Burl Ives turned one of the greatest folk songs and turned it into a kids jingle. Just shameful

Pete Seeger was a member of the communist party until the late 40's, but he still considers himself a commie. Read his wikipedia entry. If anyone is a traitor, it would be Pete.
