  • They filmed the ...

They filmed the Nicholas brothers separately so they could remove their segment when they showed the movie the segregationist south. Sad really.

  • I love the Nicholas ...

I love the Nicholas Brothers. I originally saw this clip in my AP History class, and the first thing my teacher told us was that the Nicholas Brothers had to leave directly after performing. Because of the segregation laws, they could perform there, but God forbid they think about eating there.

  • Those dancers/ ...

Those dancers/singers are the Nicholas brothers.
They are fantastic. Fred Astaire said they were
the greatest athletic dancers of the 20th century. They are the best I've ever seen.
Check them out on "Chattanooga Choo Choo," when they are performing with Dorothy Dandridge(another incredible talent) from Glenn Miller's 1941 movie "Sun Valley Serenade". This is a double number with no transition
from Benneke and Marion Hutton and the Modernaires into a reprise of the song
    by the black artists.

  • Met Tex Beneke at ...

Met Tex Beneke at Wolf Trap in the late 1980's. Here I was a long-haired rocker, surrounded by older people looking at me strangely, yet he was very very kind. Signed an album and my guitar body. When we were posing for a picture with my Mom, he said, "Why don't we pose this rose between us two thorns?" Very 1940's-ish cool talk coming from Tex - a thrill I will never forget!

The descendent of Kalamazoo's first family of pharmaceuticals, the Upjohns, used what he called his ``15 minutes of fame'' to introduce MPI's management team, talk about a bioscience niche on the upswing and put perspective on a legacy.

  • The band members ...

The band members who were dropped for actors were not paid by Glenn as they were "off the band" as far as he was concerned during the making of the movie!! Tough economics of the Big Band era I guess.

Doesn't Marion Hutton look cute! She and many of the band ultimately met early ends - courtesy of the band's sponsor "Chesterfield" who supplied them with all the smokes they wanted......
