In Jesus Christ Superstar, Herod treats Jesus like a magician, asking Him to perform various signs:

'Prove to me that you're divine; change my water into wine.'
'Prove to me that I'm no fool; walk across my swimming-pool.'
'Feed my household with this bread; you can do it on your head.'

Similarly, the crowd in this sketch believe that Jesus is the Son of God because they see that he can perform 'magic,' not because of His teachings. The basis for their belief is therefore weak.
