April 2008
Kurdish ambitions for independence and their own oil revenue is raising alarm bells in Washington and Baghdad. Tensions are escalating, with both sides threatening violence.
According to US official Jon Cebra, the Kurds welcomed the overthrow of Saddam Hussein as "an opportunity to reintegrate into the rest of Iraq." But on the streets of the Kurdish capital, Irbil, no-one's interested in reintegretion. "Independence is on its way because Iraq's future is to be divided". The Kurds now have their own government and army and collect their own taxes. But more significantly, they're signing their own oil deals, and it's a very sensitive issue. The Kurdish government is also going to extreme lengths to boost the Kurdish population of Kirkuk, which it hopes will become the new capital. "They gave ,000 to people to come back", states Azadeen. The Kurds were once said to be America's best friends in the Middle East. Now, they wonder whether their independence was ever part of America's plans. There was meant to be a referendum last December on the issue. That vote has now been postponed indefinitely but the issue is not going away. "If the referendum is not implemented, we are afraid that something will happen." states President Massoud Barzani. "What may happen, I can't tell you now. But for sure it will not remain like now".

  • I and many others ...

I and many others are very concerned what will
happen to the Kurds when we pull out of Iraq
The way America abandoned them after the first
Gulf War is a stain on our conscience. I wholeheartedly support an independent Kurdistan. But Americans as a whole won't support murder of civilians as an end to this
means. Believe me I say that the U.S. has no wish to "colonialize" any one especialy the Kurds. There are MANY in the U.S. that are trying it influence policy in favor of the Kurds.

  • America will ...

America will withdraw to the north and work with the Kurds to secure the oil fields. Leaving the Iran and Saudi Arabia(sunni shia factions)to fight over the rest. This will happen with in the next eighteen to twentyfour
months. Civil war in Iraq is inevitable, the Kurds are at least open to some form of democracy and they are willing to work with the U.S. The U.S. will eventualy convince the Kurdish rebels to cease hostilities with Turkey. We won't support terroism against Turkey from the Kurds

  • Maybe this reporter ...

Maybe this reporter should go to Arab parts of Iraq and try to interview and criticize people like Al Saadir and his Mahdy Army while dodging car bombs, suicide attacks, dead American solders and people who call her infidel and want to cut off her head like the heads of may other westerners they cut off. Nahhh....that would be dangerous, so she will just come to Kurdistan where its safe and free to criticize the Kurdish government.

  • I'm not sure what ...

I'm not sure what this reporter is expecting. The Kurdish leaders are putting together a quick democracy without help from any country. I see a News paper criticizing the Kurdish regional government. A leader that give an interview to someone who is going to criticize him and says hes aware of corruption and working to fix it. I don't know about you, but that looks like an ok Democracy for a people who are still under attack from its neighbors and Iraq's Arab population.
