Absolutely amazing how old country songs can sometimes hit really close to home.

REAL Country-Western -- right up there with the best of Hank Sr., George Jones, Johnny Cash, and the rest of the old-school greats. And can you imagine someone writing a song like this today? If they did, it would be the COMPLETE OPPOSITE of Merle's classic -- the narrator would blame EVERYONE and EVERYTHING *but himself* for his wasted life. Thanks for posting this!

merl haggard has this thing about him, a spirit or aurora, few country singers have championed normal people like merle...apparently he was in san quinton when cash played there and later on johnny cashes show johnny is playing a very expensive guitar while merle plays a much cheaper but sufficient guitar and even in this video his clothes and guitar are much more simple than the whole nashville dress up though i find nothing wrong with that. its all relative but i like haggards songs/humility!

my mama tried but i just never ever listened, now 20 years later, 13 year meth addicition, various 60 day stints in the 7 metro area jails, many arrests, and countless broken relationships--- i have finally kicked the nasty habit, that mama hated since day 1--- and i thank you god and merle too-- this song means so much--- cause mama always did try-- and oh yeah METH S**ks !!!!!!!!!!1
