Here, we show you how to grow a Kombucha "baby" without a "mother" by using a bottle of kombucha tea.
It just has to be unpasteurized and unflavored. This is one method of starting a baby culture. Experiment with other ingredients! let us know how they work out for you. This video is for people who know a little bit about kombucha, so there is less detail. For people who are having difficulty with growing a baby, I sometimes run into times when it doesn't work. The times that it has been the most successful is when I have grown it in temperatures above 85 degrees. I did one recently where the temp was about a steady 65-70 degrees and nothing happened. So I am going to try to grow it in an incubator box at about 90 degrees and see what happens! Feel free to post a video response of your successful baby-mama!

  • You can try the ...

    You can try the following:
Put some of the pure unpasteurized kombucha in a glass, cover it with a cloth and just wait until you get a mushroom. This works for me.

Always add some of your kombucha tea to your tea of your new batch to make it sour.

Yes, I know. I used unpasteurized. I tried 4 times and it didn't work. I gave it one last go and it's 'brewing' right now. This time I put in 3 mini-scobies, strong black tea, and a bit more sugar than the previous batches. Hope it works. I'm spending more on this experiment than if I'd just gone and bought a damn scoby.

  • This didn't work ...

This didn't work for me. It's been way over 2 weeks and a mushroom didn't form. I did 4 different teas, and none worked. Weird thing, though, is none went bad, either. My room smells like wine :). But only some foam type stuff on top and that's it. I keep thinking it might work so I leave them; but I suppose I should dump them now. I did throw one out at the very start because a fruit fly got in and the spot where it landed turned molded.

  • Keep in mind that ...

Keep in mind that your kombucha mushroom needs nitrogene from the tea to grow, oxygene to breath and sugar to eat. So never use a hermetic cover.

Don't move your jar for > 7 days or there won't grow a new mushroom. If you wait longer, your new mushroom still grows on top, but your tea becomes even more sour. You have something like vinegar after around 20 days, but this acid protects your mushroom, too.

Normal is a water to sugar ratio of 10:1, but I use a bit less sugar.

  • Started mine last ...

Started mine last week, but I live in the mountains... so my house never gets all that warm, even on top of the fridge. Checked it yesterday and I saw the carbonation bubbles... so I assume its working. Also, I got a tea jub with a spigot thinking I could do a continous batch, just replace what kombucha I take out with new sweet tea. Any feedback on that? Also, what would you say the ration of sugar to tea is... cup sugar for how many cups tea?? Thanks!

  • Is there a followup ...

Is there a followup, Guys? Really appreciate this vid; but need to know what next!
would also be helpful to know how to store the mushroom. Also, is it indefinite? Will I never have to make another mother? Lots of questions; I have not found a really good explanation of the process. Your short vid, here, is actually the best, and most easily explained I've seen.
    Now, about that followup...

    ;^)

I purchased High Country Kombucha tee and opened it and took a few drinks, then I let it sit at room temperature for a couple of hours, then refrigerated it and then the next day I had a mini baby.
