Inbound, docruger is right. You obviously have never shot this gun. If you lock in, you will crush your wrist and the palm of your hand. This is a heavyweight slugger. If you don't roll with the punch, it's gonna hurt worse. How do I know? I own that gun and shoot those 700 grain rounds. And yes, that was my reaction when I first fired a 700 grain round.

I can tell you've never shot a 500 mag before. if you shoot it like that you could hurt your wrist. you need to relax and grip the firearm like a firm handshake.

Yeah that gun has a 5" barrel and 1:10" twist. Talk about a specialized gun.
BTW I doubt that closing the gap to .0035" boosts your MV another 100'/sec
I mean damn, how wide is a factory 500? The 460 comes standard with a .0030" gap. Then again you're running 65K PSI; 5K beyond the 500. The 460 needs tighter tolerances because of flamecutting. Internally speaking, the 460 is a hotter round. Compare gun construction, charge weights, and operating pressures if you dont believe me.

John Ross has a custom S&W run done with more rifling and no compensator. This model stabilizes the 700 grain and does not have the muzzle-blast of the stocker. He also closed the gap between the cylinder face and the barrel so that the side blast is much less, also giving the bullet another
100'/sec. $1400. The 700 hardcast is a great point-blank bear round in any version, tho.
In the bush, I load 2 CorBon 440's for range, then 3 700gr. thumpers to keep it off me.
