Lye can be very dangerous, that part is true. But when you make soap the chemicals change during a process called saponification. The oils and the Sodium Hydroxide change. At first the acidity and PH are too high for you to use on your skin. After the saponification is comlete and you let your soap cure for about 2-3 weeks, its safe enough to use on a newborn. Im not a chemist, so I cant explain how saponification changes the chemicals, but it does! And makes damn good soap in the process.

I want to try this, but I don't understand about the lye. It seems like it's really serious stuff. You wore gloves while you were mixing it. Does the heat it produces neutralize whatever is dangerous about it? What makes it safe for your skin? Do all soaps have lye in it? Thanks so much for making these videos. I'm going to watch you cut the soap into cakes now. Bye!
