"Tarzan the Ape Man" (1981) was directed by John Derek and starred his wife, Bo Derek, as Jane Parker; Miles O'Keefe as Tarzan; Richard Harris as James Parker; and John Phillip Law as Harry Holt. This film is generally considered the worst of all of the Tarzan films.

  • Bo hates this film, ...

Bo hates this film, too. She felt it was quite a failure, especially in comparison to Greystoke, which she is fond of. Poor Miles was under contract by John not to speak to Bo on set nor could he give any interviews or promote the film in any way. John felt it would make the relationship between Jane and Tarzan more authentic that way (again, Bo felt the film missed the boat on that).

  • I heard that the ...

I heard that the estate of Edgar Rice Burrows actually tried to take legal action against the producers, it was considered so bad. Miles O'Keefe truly is the Great Wooden Ape. Maybe it's just my dirty mind, but when Bo tells him she's still a virgin and says 'What are you... you'd have to be, wouldn't you?' at 2.03, there's a funny look on that chimpanzee's face....You no Tell, Me no Tell, eh?

I'm intrigued by the idea of Tarzan being Jane's personal gigolo. Could be amusing.

  • I am one of what ...

I am one of what must be TENS of people who saw movie at the theater, going solely to get a gander at Miles O'Keefe; I knew by instinct the film itself would stink. And stink it does; it totally reeks. And yet it's sort of fun because it's SO stupid. Derek's acting is deplorably bad; O'Keefe out-acts her easily simply by remaining silent. I love your how your intro almosts BOASTS that it's "generally considered the worst of all of the Tarzan films."

    Your notes are a hoot.

Come on...the film wasn't that bad if you take it for it's camp value. Even Roger Ebert called it a movie he was ashamed to admit he liked.

  • The two best ...

The two best Weissmuller films are the first two - "Tarzan the Ape Man" (1932) and "Tarzan and His Mate" (1934), although modern audiences may find them a bit creaky in parts. A couple of other fun ones are "Tarzan and the Amazons" (1945) and "Tarzan and the Leopard Woman" (1946) from the campier RKO period. There are twelve Weismuller Tarzan films - six "classic" ones made by MGM and six lower-budget, and more corny ones made by RKO.

See "The Tarzan Collection" (Vols 1 & 2), from Warners.

  • Well, my area of ...

Well, my area of specialisation is the cinematic representations of Edgar Rice Burrough's famous jungle character. While Bo and her husband's product is an abysmal effort it is now part of the Tarzan canon and therefore part of the "family", so to speak. I have a slight tinge of affection for it on those grounds alone, I'm ashamed to admit.

  • I think you might ...

I think you might be talking about the scene of the male model fighting the rock-&-roll wrestler. Even though that mohawked meathead didn't utter a word at all it was obvious he was an incredibly lousy actor. I remember his scenes recovering fom his drunken revelry and yawning being painful to watch.

I am quoting some of this stuff from my web page about this film. The link is in the "More Info" section above if you want to read my full discourteous analysis of this repugnant film.
