Metro's 'That Midnight Kiss' Introduces Mario Lanza to Film Fans at Capitol
By BOSLEY CROWTHER
..."The champagne-bottle exploding took place at the Capitol yesterday.
As for the budding Mr. Lanza, the opinion rendered of him by the sanguine Mr. Iturbi is good enough for us. "His voice," says Mr. Iturbi, "has quality and warmth and he has a very nice personality." Check. We'll wait to see how he can act. A slight disposition to be too radiant and follow Mickey Rooney's footwork style betrays his youthful inexperience. No doubt, he will improve.
His voice richly demonstrated on such familiar airs as "Celeste Aida," Donizetti's "Una Furtiva Lagrima" and "Mama Mia Che Vo Sapé" from "Cavalleria Rusticana," as well as on "They Won't Believe Me," by Jerome Kern. Alongside the lovely Miss Grayson, who sings the "Caro Nomé" aria from "Rigoletto" and "Russian Nightingale," he holds a commendable candle, which is saying plenty for him. Maybe he isn't a new Caruso, as they claim him to be. But, then, who is?"
