Dylan wrote "Went To See The Gypsy" after his first meeting with Elvis Presley. Several references are made regarding Presley's career move in Las Vegas, but there's also a mention of a "little Minnesota town," a rare instance where Dylan references his own childhood. Are They really met or it was only Dylan's fantasy? I don't know...

WENT TO SEE THE GYPSY (Words and Music by Bob Dylan) 1970, 1976 Big Sky Music
Went to see the gypsy, Stayin' in a big hotel. He smiled when he saw me coming, And he said, "Well, well, well." His room was dark and crowded, Lights were low and dim. "How are you?" he said to me, I said it back to him. I went down to the lobby To make a small call out. A pretty dancing girl was there, And she began to shout, "Go on back to see the gypsy. He can move you from the rear, Drive you from your fear, Bring you through the mirror. He did it in Las Vegas, And he can do it here." Outside the lights were shining On the river of tears, I watched them from the distance With music in my ears. I went back to see the gypsy, It was nearly early dawn. The gypsy's door was open wide But the gypsy was gone, And that pretty dancing girl, She could not be found. So I watched that sun come rising From that little Minnesota town.

Again, you accused me of saying Elvis was the sole influence on the Beatles. But to your last question which is a provocative one...
One of the factors in the Beatles being so immediately successful is that they were so authentic-not another watered down Elvis wannabe like so many in between him and them. Just like Elvis they had an edge and a brand new sound.
That in no way means that Paul and John were lying when they said how influenced and mesmerized they were with Elvis Presley.
I am an Elvis fan too, 50s, 60s and 70s. And I do good covers of him on guitar (so they say). The music and singing style, I'm a big fan of, but I think Dylan contributed more to Beatles substance than Elvis.

The music would have probably been different, maybe not as good, and tracks like "Lady Madonna" and "Back in the USSR" might have never existed, but to base their rock & roll influence solely on Elvis is a misconception. Afterall, the four member's fascination with music was there before they were teens. The question is how many of their greatest hits could you hear Elvis on.

It is unfortunate that the '77 Special aired showing him as the ill person he was. He was bloated from the corticosterioids, taken for one of his numerous illnesses, not eating too much.
Years ago Paul said Chuck Berry and a few others, along with Elvis were his. Now he names only Elvis. John didn't go around wearing an Elvis pin to put Elvis down. He greatly admired him.
No communication with ignorance.
There's far more images of the gorgeous Elvis.
I never said or even implied that Elvis was the sole influence on the Beatles.
I do a lot of 'Elvis defending' because people don't know music history or they try to rewrite it. And that's because unfortunately there are far more images of an overweight, high and bored Elvis in a jumpsuit than there are of the cool and electrifying Elvis of the 50's-and even up to the early 70's.
