Incredible: Australia 'Come Walkabout' Commercial Directed by Baz Luhrmann for Tourism Australia

  • In Australia, or ...

In Australia, or any other country, you will see most tourists walking around taking photos in front of the stereotypical attractions. Advertise crocodiles, kangaroos, koalas, Sydney Harbour, beaches, the outback, lovable larikins who love a beer with their mates, barbecues and Aussie slang. Most tourists want to see touristy stuff, why should we be embarrased to advertise it. Sophisticated travellers will do the research for the special experience.

What a great ad. Quite moving. I bet 'Oz' the movie will be great as well. When does Baz put anything out that's mediocre? never. Nice one bud.

  • Its about ...

Its about representation.. Aboriginals need representation just like every other Australian.. And personally, id rather have a young Aussie kid selling this country to the world than Lara bloody Bingle.
The ad is centered around the idea of the Walkabout (Aboriginal rite of passage).. And the idea that you need to get lost to find yourself. I grew up in the outback, so I have an idea of the vastness of the Australian landscape. But the ads not actually pitched at me. its made for Americans

  • OK, amendment - ...

OK, amendment - being half naked isn't backward, can I retract that? But I've heard one Aboriginal commentator take issue with using a half dressed boy as verging on abuse... so it's worth considering.

  • The ad paints ...

The ad paints Aborigines as mystical, Other, backwards (the boy's half naked) and spiritually superior. A caricature stuck in the past. Most Aborigines I know grew up in the city, have never been to central Australia, and are as spiritually inclined as I am (I'm "Anglo-Aust."), and they don't care for this ad campaign. Prove to me these ads are benefiting Indigenous Australians, economically, culturally and emotionally. Prove to me it's not exploitation.

  • who are you to say ...

who are you to say that? you are complaining yourself.
+ people are not complaining, people are arguing for the better. something needs to change about this racist stuff, and issues with Indigenous people.
People arguing here are trying to discuss here about something important unlike you who probably are ignorant about this issue and do not even give a sh!t

  • Totally agree with ...

    Totally agree with you!
We should not be pround of "Australia" or "Australian culture" unless Indigenous voices are heared. It is disgraceful to take advantage of Indigenous culture (only a tiny bit of exotic aspects of Indigenous culture) to attract tourists who does not have any knowledge about what has happened in the hisotry and what still has not changed.

  • People are clearly ...

People are clearly reading too much into the advertisement-
right, then where do majority of people get information from? TV, magazines, newspapers...they are all controlled by non-Indigenous, ignorant people. Have you ever even read any books,or seen tv shows or any source of information controlled and made by Indigenous person? probably not. Ignorant things like this ad forms much bigger problems and creates ignorant and covertly racist people...

  • Of course we can ...

Of course we can always make an exception for when buisness/government needs something to villify/point at or for the tourist industry to exploit. Aboriginal artwork, music, folklore, customs, dances etc.. you gotta love it.

  • Come to Australia ...

Come to Australia where no one says "to find yourself you have to go walkabout", where the traditional aboriginal isnt part of mainstream society. What a disgrace
