In this clip from Herzog's "My Best Fiend: Klaus Kinski", we get to see footage of Jason Robards (the original "Fitzcarraldo") with his sidekick, Mick Jagger. Herzog then shows us Klaus Kinski's performance, which puts them to shame.
Lol, I love the way Kinski just pops up out of nowhere and snatches the scene away from Robards and Jagger.

This film and "Aguirre, der Zoern Gottes" are obsessive to the point of Opera house in Aquido. Herzog labored in a Pennsylvania steel mill to help finance his entry into directing. I think much of the Kinski/Herzog love/hate was based on their shared stubborness.

When there's a point for most of them where they start to be afraid of the role, of showing themselves pathetic, ugly etc., he had virtually no limits. And he could still act with full consciousness. That, for me, is his greatness.

I mean, he could learn the role, he didn't need to play himself.

By spiff10009 [Affiliate User] 1202531561 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveKinskin wasnt an actor, he was Kinski, thats why he was so effective, strange looking bloke but good all the same
By sligo74 [Affiliate User] 1200788485 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe funny thing is Robards WAS a good actor, he had some v.good roles like Cheyenne in Once upon a time in the West or that movie with J. Fonda...
But there was really only one actor who could fit Fitzcarraldo's shoes
Jagger sucked sooo bad, I wonder WTF Herzog meant when he was saying that losing him was like the biggest disaster in his filmmaker's career
the best rol played ever
By Zimmerman79 [Affiliate User] 1200037127 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIn the audio comment of Fitzcarraldo Werner Herzog voiced the opinion that Jason Robards had different qualities as Fitzcarraldo. I wonder what they are.

By manferot [Affiliate User] 1199580427 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveJason Robards style of acting was of a subtler nature, and, as fine an actor as he undoubtably was,the part of Fitzcarraldo,as this wonderful clip demonstrates, needed Kinski,s genius and ...aw F**k it! the guys great !!
By charliemctruth [Affiliate User] 1198197435 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWow! It's like a soap opera the first time and an epic the second...
And who the F**k let Jagger ACT? Didn't even know that until this very moment. Not exactly chuffed by it. ;)
