Uh, the last time I checked, I think there was one called the x-15, it went Mach 6.7, of course that was at 350,000 feet. It had a pilot but didn't take off on it's own. I guess that makes it not an airplane....anyway, the SR-71 goes at least Mach 3.2, although the Arrow was a very nice aircraft it would not have performed like either of these, eh?

Sure, but you still have to get in range. Earlier, intercepting was seen on as a more important role. For most air-forces it's not consider that important today.

Theres no need to,but im sure they could.What exactly do you win? Most air to air engagement is carried out at distance due to the advances in missile and radar technology. Just look at the F-22 or the Eurofighter Typhoon.

This aircraft was built for SPEED in the 1950's and in it's day not much could catch it,we now know that manoeverability is just as important so a comparison with modern fighters is pretty pointless,as for the italians having the best pilots?,well who knows?.
