An experiment using civilian aircraft and atomic clocks to provide evidence for Einsteins time dilation theory. Time dilation applies to satellites that orbit the earth as they move forward in time by 0.01 seconds per year. This may not seem much but the clocks on the satellites need to take this into account in order to stay in time with clocks on earth. • This experiment ...

This experiment doesn't account for the increased centrifugal force that is being applied to these clocks. Because the earth is spinning, flying in the direction of the spin (EAST) would increase the planes angular velocity. The true cause for the change in the atomic clocks is because of the increased centrifugal force, which, in layman's terms, screws around with the clocks inner workings.

  • Yeah I thought of ...

Yeah I thought of that and thanks for bringing it up although we are beyond it now. Indeed it seems like there are many misconceptions having to do with time dilation and that many common sources are misrepresenting the facts or poorly representing them at best. I can say that acceleration is not a cause of differential aging and also that you should not believe everything you read on the internet. Further than that this is not really a good place to discuss such things.

  • The experiment was ...

The experiment was in 1971 probably before any kind of GPS became as sophisticated as it is today.

  • I find it hard to ...

I find it hard to believe people who have to be so defensive in their responses. And I did not claim to be an expert but I have read that from many sources over time just by chance although I was not researching it. If you can explain it in it's entirety maybe you should try to help correct misguided sources on the subject.

  • "In the end the ...

"In the end the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it. It was inevitable that they should make that claim sooner or later: the logic of their position demanded it. Not merely the validity of experience, but the very existence of external reality, was tacitly denied by their philosophy. The heresy of heresies was common sense. And what was terrifying was not that they would kill you for thinking otherwise, but that they might be right."

  • Read an original ...

Read an original manual about GPS systems. You have no clue what you are talking about. Or be ignorant and stick to wikipedia or some cranky theoretical physicist website. It isnot real and it will never be real. And atomic clocks are adjusted for gravity but not for the magics of SRT.

  • This is noticed ...

This is noticed with GPS satellites orbiting the planet that need to maintain the exact time at all times and so each contain their own atomic clock. The clocks are in fact slowed down to compensate for the 38 microseconds per day due to both special and general relativity.

I don't see why they would go through so much trouble to try and notice this on a slow moving jet. It is in fact real and accounted for.

  • what a bunch of ...

what a bunch of idiots.. to be able to witness time dilation u need to be in a different frame of reference also the most important thing is these things are don at speeds relative to the speed of light by almost 90% or more.. what the hek are these idiots trying to prove here.. "i dont trust these professors that scribble stuff on the blackboard" what an idiot .. does he realise that the same professor has proposed a theory that is currently in use by every physicist in the world..

  • I would have to ...

I would have to agree with you nathan42100. The world does not keep a VCR with memories of the entire world that we can simply rewind and fast forward.

    That's what time travel suggests.

Time is simply a human concept, the notion that the universe has a massive VCR containing all the events that happened.

Also, remember those atomic clocks didn't show discrepancies when they were stationary. It was only after they were moved.
