"at least not the way they were" - yeah, but you can morse in other ways when you can't talk. Like with light, or by watching the other guy's finger, or with clicks etc.
Morse also works in extremely noisy conditions where you might not be able to make out words, but you can tell if a tone is on or off.

Well, yeah... but then you are comparing a completely different type of tech again. You could also say that email or IM would be faster still - but the point was to compare sms with morse.

If the recipient of the message is at the other end, and sound is allowed, the guys with the phones could just talk. Talking is an even older method of communicating, and faster than either.

SMS is used when you can't talk, and when you can't talk, you can't morse either, at least not the way they were.

Now, if you put a morse code translator on your phone, and we all learned to send morse code in school, then we'd have something. Phones would only need one button.

Sounded like about 25-30WPM Morse code from what I can recall speed-wise. As N7YA mentioned there are much faster communication speeds attainable via Morse code. Great post! 73 DE N7LTH

I was so not surprised. Morse code will easily beat any cell phone text messaging technology because all you work with are dots and "long" dots to spell a character whereas the phones they use requires only two thumbs and you need to hit at most 3 times on each alphanumberic key to create a letter.

OMG, I haven't keyed in 42 yrs (USN), and I was pretty good back then. Talk about flashbacks. Their Morse sounded a lot like CW, not Morse. We used to joke with the signalmen about semaphore, light, and CW. The signalmen were always using hand signals to get away with (ahem!) private conversations. They were so damn fast, it was like watching Ameslan conversations between deaf people - they had all kind of abbreviations. We just used fingertapping to do the same thing. Looking for a Mac program.

They really werent sending the code extremely fast, there are guys on the air that can send 60+ word per minute...not a text messanger alive, even with a qwerty board that can do it faster.

I still know morse code.. at my best in the Ol' day was 35 wpm. I once in a while ditty bop letter's off bill board signs ... etc .. to keep in practice ....... USAF 80`s England !!!
