You will find it very hard to pop the mold without flanging, something this shape would be almost impossible. That method would be good for a once off part... but really its not that much more effort to do it the correct way.

Your saying do the same thing as this, but make each half individually with each mold having no flanging. There are many many problems with this. For a start foil will not give you a true negative of the mold surface. Your masking tape line having no flange will get lost in translation, It is quite hard to join two individual halfs together after on its own and it leaves a seam to deal with.
By punk28186 [Affiliate User] 1224665747 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThis might be hard to explain, but i know another good technique:
You would use foil tape and use it to make your line, but extend it an extra few inches. make mold #1 to the tape edge. Then make another mold with the line going a few inchs past the other side. Make a part from mold#1, trim the line off. The put it in mold#2, and add the 'glass the the first part, joining with the new part you are glassing. if youre interested in a drawing of ow to do this, email me! But GREAT work bro!!!
Extreme skills !

By browndog1978 [Affiliate User] 1222955461 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHello, You did a nice job showing the process. I did a lot of fiberglassing. I used to make the underground storage tanks for gassoline and other fluids. I did not make many molds though. Very informative.
Thanks.
Flanging is necessary because it defines the edge and give you a green zone to work with during layup. It is specially needed for multi part molds because its your split line.

By mistklmon [Affiliate User] 1219800607 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Remove:) yeah kinda, but not like in that karate movie, you need to wait for the wax to dry on the surface b4 taking it off.
