That is a good question. It all depends on the vehicle. Generally electricity is cheaper than gas powered vehicles. If your car is running optimal, then the extra weight of the batteries and load on the alternator to the engine would be a loss. If you do not have a lot of stop and starts on the journey or have an overpowered alternator it will work.

In a perfect world, it would not help because your car would be less efficient with the weight and load, but in reality it depends on the vehicle.
