Correct, diesel fuel would not ignite like that.
But the way the fire suddenly ignites at impact indicates a charge set off.

Now that I look carefully, I see a white fog which must have been the non combustible propellant aerosoling the gasoline to make that flare-up. (Fire starts on side opposite engine just at impact, though there is no reason for it to have done that.)

why wouldnt it happen in real life? the train hitting the van and the metal on metal friction can cause a spark, as can metal on the stones on the track, that and the fuel tank splitting could cause it to explode. if it was a diesel van, then i doubt it would happen at all, due to the different flash points between the two

The tank can be ruptured and spill gas everywhere. And, aerosoled fuel will ignite much like an explosion.
Here, I believe, to make it more spectacular, they placed a charge to aerosol gas and an igniter. Interestingly, fumes in a gas tank displace enough O2 thathe fumes will not ignite.
