VAN DAMME'S FIGHT RECORD:
17 Knock Outs 1 Loss

* 1976 at age 16 Van Damme (Van Varenberg) won by knockout over T. Van Oostrum in 46 seconds in a full-contact debut sanction by the European Karate Union in Brussels. Van Damme then threw himself with earnest into his karate training.

* 1977 Van Damme competed in the Netherlands Kickboxing Federation which allowed round kicks to inside and outside of the thigh as well as knee strikes to the body. (Ouch). Matches were five three-minute rounds. Van Damme won TKO over Maurice Devos in first round.

* 1978 The 18-year old Jean-Claude was now a truly skilled fighter scoring an 18-second KO over E. Strauss, a 39-second stoppage when M. Juvillier quit the fight and a 12-second stoppage of O. Lang all at the EKU tournament in Antwerp, Belgium the Beginner Division.

In follow-up tournament in Iseghem, Belgium under World-All Styles Karate Organization (WAKO) he won his second Beginner's Championship with a first round stoppage over E. Leibman and Cyrrille Nollet. Van Damme also scored victories over Andre Robaeys, Jacques Pinarski, and Rolf Risberg. Rules permitting judo throws, footsweep but not thigh kicks.

* 1979 Jean-Claude Van Varenberg (Van Damme) went to Orlando, Florida USA with his 10-knockout wins and no loss to compete in the WAKO World Full-Contact Championships. In his middleweight division he met the unbeaten American fighter Sherman Bergman from Miami, Florida USA in a scheduled two 2-minute rounds. Bergman knocked Van Damme down in opening seconds -- but Van Damme pulled himself up and knocked out Bergman with a beautiful axe-kick ( ). Next Van Damme stopped Portugal's Gilberto Diaz in opening 30-seconds. Elated, the 19 year old skipped training seriously for the semi-finals losing a 2-round decision to Patrick Teugels also from his home country, Belgium; Teugels became the Worlds Vice Champion.

Returning to Europe with a fierce determination known to highly competitive young males, Van Damme knocked out Algeria's Mustapha A. Benamon and Bekim M. Muhammad in independent events by European Professional Karate Association.

* 1980 Van Damme's hometown, Brussels, Belgium hosted the renowned
Professional Karate Association (PKA) event where Van Damme as a young 19 year old teenager knocked out France's highly respected Georges Verlugels in 2 rounds winning the "Professional" European Middleweight Kickboxing Championship.

Weeks later Van Damme in an event sponsored by the European Professional Karate Association, retain his Professional Kickboxing Championship with a stoppage over Hungarian, Andras Kovac.

Van Damme enjoyed run-away popularity at his achievement when defeating older, more experience fighters at just 19.

But before retiring Van Damme requested a rematch with Patrick Teugels who was rated second in the world middleweight division and the only one to have defeated Van Damme. The rematch held in Brussels was scheduled for five 2-minute rounds. Van Damme stormed Teugels with an avalanche of aggressive fury completely overwhelming his opponent; the match was halted in under the two minute mark. Van Damme in a frenzy avenged his only loss and holds a 17 to 1 victory record!

  • i agree but jet li ...

i agree but jet li is just that , a martial artist. there is a fine line between martial artist and actual fighter. i think he would kill van damme but i also thing that if he fell in a pit with a ufc champion he himself would meet an abrupt end.

  • van damme does give ...

van damme does give martial arts a bad name. he was a coke head ,a woman beater ,a womanizer, an alcoholic, and he did make a false claim about being a world champion. so dont tell me about what is and isnt his fault about the impression people have of him. now, i think his movies are entertaining but he did try to market himself as a real fighter which clearly he is not. it makes me laugh every time someone talks about how accomplished van damme is as a martial artist. does he behave like one?

  • another thing. i ...

another thing. i didnt teach like that to be tough, i taut that way so that i know in my heart that im giving my students the same 200% effort that i expected from them and so i knew they could actually survive in a real world situation. fighting is very bad , but , yes i taut my students that if they took every effort to avoid a fight and were still forced to fight then they were to become a destructive animal with absolute willingness to win even if it meant fighting dirty. tell me im wrong.

  • really? what ...

really? what exactly am i wrong about? the reason i didnt have many students is because in my school every student was required to spend at leas 1 full year in every belt rank , and sparring every class was mandatory. so naturally it wasnt very popular with your typical soccer mom who wants a couple hour baby sitter for her kid everyday. and yes i held class everyday. also my students were required to compete in full contact competitions in order to even be considered for rank promotion.

  • Jean-Claude Van ...

Jean-Claude Van Damme is far from being responsible for what you're saying.
He's not even close to it.
Do you really thing he is responsible for
the "white belt" perception about what is martial arts ?
That martial arts is for street fight ?
That because the actor Van Damme kick on
screen they need to learn how to destroy someone ?
This is so a white belt comment from
a : "i didnt have many students but" master.

  • dont take offense ...

dont take offense to that. its just that i love martial arts with all my heart and i just want to make sure that the line between being able to fight and looking good on film is very clear. dont forget that a real fight is a brutal and nasty thing and there are no rules and the cheater always wins in a real fight. even bruce lee himself said that. bruce even bit a man in a fight when he was a teenage but he did what it took to win and thats all that counts. movie guys dont have it in them.

  • top list for movie ...

top list for movie martial artist or actual fighters? because if your talking about being able to fight for real then van damme and jet li should be removed from your list and replaced buy chuck norris and don "the dragon" wilson. but of course norris and wilson arent as fun to watch as van damme and jet li but they are real fighters and real champions. in fact the only man on that list of yours who i think could really street fight is bruce lee, after all the street is the only place it counts.

  • i hope no body ...

i hope no body takes offense to my last comment but i love martial arts even though my career is long over. people like van damme give it a bad name . when people came to my school learn from me they wanted to learn what they saw in movies , not the real brutality that fighting is. i didnt have many students but the ones i had learned very quickly that fighting IS ONLY REASON TO LEARN MARTIAL ARTS,if its fun your doing it wrong. of course, the teachers out for money to sell belts would disagree.
