Notice the 'in joke' about The Hustler? Lest we all forget, Herbert John Gleason was nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal of Minnesota Fats.

I heard Danny Thomas observe to Luci Arnaz once, in reference to her father's own greatest talent, "If you don't have a great straight man, you don't have any laughs." The reason these segments work so riotously well as they do, is because, great a comedian as he was, Gleason was an even better straight man. Fontaine puts the ball in the air; Gleason's reactions spike it over the net.

"Joe the Bartender" was a regular part of Jackie's variety show, going all the way back to his "CAVALCADE OF STARS" on DuMont in 1950- "Joe" was modeled on a real New York bartender Gleason knew...

Back in the 80's my Nanna would be sitting in the lounge and just start laughing for a good half hour. Finally she would relate a sketch from the Jackie Gleason Show that had come to mind for her! That's the impact of this show!

I TOTALLY agree with you about the trash they try to pass off as entertainment...you do not need desperate gimmicks when you have TRUE talent. The finest TV there will EVER be!

Some may remember that Crazy (Frank Fontaine) had an absolutely stunning singing voice. He would sometimes sing on the show.
